  • Better Guitarist: Kurt Cobain or Mark Tremonti?

Best answer: Mark Tremonti. Kurt Cobain was not that good at playing the guitar. He could play simply rhythms while singing but that's about it. It wasn't anything special and nothing that should regard him as amazing. Just average

I just joined a band as the singer and the guitarist is the "leader" of the group, has the practice space and arranges the shows. As soon as I joined they told me we had a show soon that we're headlining and I needed to help write to 12+ songs. So I've been rushing and the songs are good, but I don't feel connected to them really, they're fun though and we're a pop punk band. I try to give ideas and the guitarist shuts them down until he comes to his own conclusion that it works. When I mess up, he'll be condescending and try to teach me about music and I just get this overall underlying controlling behavior from him. The rest of the band goes along with him leading everything. We also have different writing dynamic, he needs to sit and write and work on issues right in the moment which can get overwhelming for me if I'm having a hard time getting it, I need to see what needs to get done and then take it home to get a feel of it and by next practice I have it. I love music, but being in a band has become stressful and I guess I was naive and thought it'd be more fun? Last night it was super late and I just wasn't getting the rhythm on a part and I was like "Hey I need to listen to this a few times first" and then he told me to leave and that I was wasting his time. I"m not sure what to do because I like the music we produce overall and I love performing with them, but I feel like we just don't get along. Should I suck it up and figure out how to make it work, or bail??? Thx

  • Blondie or The Ramones?

Best answer: Both bands are great. I have to give the edge to the Ramones -- I really dislike some of Blondie's late-era electronic and dance experiments. At their worst, the Ramones simply made a boring album.

Richie, C.J., and Elvis Ramone (aka Clem Burke) are still alive as well.

Best answer: Wow, that's like four questions... Heavy, 'Dude... But fun.

Main Q: Certainly some, as so many musicians cut their teeth on it, or in turn did so upon other players that had. Like it's hard to cook without salt, pepper, onions, and garlic in there somewhere... Ain't no substitute for the real thing, once tasted. (I haven't eaten yet, so also think of olive oil, green pepper, cheese, etc.)

Q#2: I think few acts are under pressure to go after classic rock fans, as that's a pretty small segment of the purchasing market. Any pressure is more likely within the band itself.

Q#3: For those that do, classic rock fans may push back, mock them, etc., but it's a small voice crying in the wilderness. Meantime, the main market will largely ignore such acts, instead millions spending millions for Rap/Hip-Hop - market "success"...

Q#4: The creative process is where the road goes everywhere. The process is really only somewhat related to "success", given the market value of youth, beauty, trends, and the incessant demand for "newness". Sure, there's creativity in play there, too, but sometimes only marginally connected with actual music. I really don't know what evolution of music is in play, but it does seem to me quite a bit is devolution, or deconstructionism.

That's about it, without expanding, given a request. Meanwhile, I've decided to make a couple of burritos, with refried black beans...

UPDATE (permanent "comment") after Hurricain's great tip: Greta Van Fleet is maybe gonna be a test case, and I sure hope they survive. They're from Frankenmuth, Michigan, and doing just fine so far in the beeg ceetee. YouTube responses suggest they are meeting a long-unmet need, which will certainly get them lotsa work. Last time I had my old head hit with such bluesy rock was maybe when the Black Crowes ("who?") were hot. And there's more than that Gibson SG to bring AC/DC to mind, in addition to the LZ comparisons. Plus a little ZZ Top, maybe even some Elmore James bite. For the peanut gallery, here's some more:
