If you like going crazy fast, a sport 600 four cylinder is the go. Bear in mind they can be kept below 100mph but they really, really don't belong there. If you want something less manic, consider a 650 Ninja, the twin cylinder.. It's basically a grown up 250 Ninj. Easy to ride at any speed and not much more size and weight than you're used to. The two most common issues I see with noob riders upgrading is underestimating i) how much heavier the bigger bike is (= low speed drops) and ii) how much more quickly they build up speed (= arriving places far too quickly).
In terms of age, go by condition rather than year. Anything built by the Japanese is going to be OK at least back to the mid-nineties, though I would go no older than 10-12 years, just because.
