Best answer: The reason people get so polarized over homosexuality doesn't have anything to do with religion. Oh, sure, there are religious bigots who feel that God needs their help to keep all humanity in line, and they're great for cherry-picking scripture to disguise their bigotry. But of all the people who are so exercised about homosexuality that they can't see any reference to it without having to announce their opposition or their disgust - or they have to make some remark in public, or be sure to lecture their kids about it at the very first opportunity - the VAST MAJORITY of those people don't go to church, don't know any scripture, and couldn't give a flying fuuk about religion and sin! So what's the deal with them?
The deal with them is this: Among men and boys, it is circulated that homosexuals are weak, ineffectual, and effeminate. In short, they combine all of the worst aspects of women, and none of the best aspects of men. Also they are dirty, perverted, sinners (because God said so, and that's all you need to know about that!). And they are criminals, except that it's politically incorrect to arrest them right now. BUT MOST OF ALL, they are - for all of the foregoing reasons - despised and rejected by the honorable brotherhood of manly men, WHICH MEANS if we suspect you are a homosexual, you go to the bottom of the pecking order of men in your community and there you will remain. You will be marked, ostracized, shunned, talked about, insulted, shoved around, spit on, and beat up - and if we're drunk enough, even killed. Nobody will give you the time of day. Nobody will hire you. Nobody will buy anything from you. You lose all benefits of your manhood club membership.
And how do we know whether to suspect you of homosexuality? That's easy: If I say "I hate fAgs!" you have to say "Yeah, me too, damn spiggots!" because if you don't, it's clear that you ARE one. If you're friends with one, you ARE one. If you are kind to one, you ARE one. If you even academically suggest maybe we don't need to hate 'em, you ARE one. And so we find ourselves surrounded by daily outbursts of "I hate homosexuals!" and "Me too!" "Me too!" And we also get to hear from the tag-along politicians and TV preachers who want to capitalize on this self-perpetuating voting bloc, and all their Sunday offerings... (or from people who like to PRETEND to themselves that they ARE politicians or priests of some sort.)
Men hate gays, in order to protect themselves - and in order to make bank - NOT because they understand what scripture says, or care about it one whit (and the more they go on about God, the truer that is).
Women hate gays for other reasons (but that's the subject for a different tirade).
