Doesn't the state of the economy have something to do with this, too? And the low-paying jobs by crooked employers taking advantage of the economic problems in the job market. And what is the government doing? Yes, it's easy to see victims of poverty as the problem but... when has that resolved anything? Many here are blaming cigarettes ("fags," which has a totally different connotation in America); if THAT is part of the problem, then urge and demand your elected officials pass legislation to outlaw cigarettes and all manner of tobacco products. It will eliminate health problems (emphysema, lung cancer, etc) to smokers and those who breathe in second-hand smoke and leave more cash in the pockets of the poor.

In America people claim that we have children going to bed hungry too. I don't think it is lack of food, but proper food that lack the nutrients needed for normal development. Our food shelves are full, school lunch programs are offered to anybody in need. Yet obesity has become one of the biggest childhood conditions. If parents are given the resources, but choose to buy cheap junk food their children, they should be punished. I will even give the benefit of the doubt, and offer nutritional counseling on the first offense. A simple blood/urine test at the doctors office is quite telling.

because so many parents have absolutely no idea about housekeeping, budgeting, and nutrition imho. worse still they prefer to eat out and have no interest in changing.

Sky high rents and mortgages, zero hours contracts so people do not know how much money they have coming in each week and cannot claim benefits, benefit delays and sanctions, in debt with massive repayments. Etc etc

For those thinking it is because they drink and smoke, the poorest ten percent spend more on fuel then the richest ten perpcent spend on alcohol, with poor people spending very little on anything but essentials

Priorities, fags, booze, more fags and booze and poor parenting.There was a bloke on tv yesterday making dinner for 93p a head. Aldi advertise, cheese, bread, yogurts, carrots and cucumber for something like £5. So feed yourself and kids first, then buy the fags .
